If you have a small environment (less than 100 VMs) then vDR is a good solution. If you are still running vSphere 4.0, 4.1 or 5.0 (well actually vCenter 4.0, 4.1 or 5.0) then continue with vDR. When you go to vSphere 5.1 or later then you will need to replace vDR with VMware vSphere Data Protection (vDP). vDR is not supported with vCenter 5.1 or 5,5. You can use vDP with vCenter 5.1 and 5.5 even if your ESXi hosts are on 4.0 or later.
